bitmask interpolation

alansquanch
Beg your pardon if this has been requested before or unable to be implemented. I'm unsure if it would kill the character of the bitmask sound, but would it be possible for interpolation between bitmasks as is done on some wavetable synthesizers? The stepping and timbre change between bitmasks is definitely part of the charm of the oscillators and I wouldn't want that taken away but as an added option if possible.

I would imagine interpolation might have been considered in development but my knowledge about how the sound is generated is limited. Anyhow, its a great synth no matter what!

Bitmasks don't always allow smooth transitions, it depends on the least significant bits compared to the most significant bits that make the waveform. For example if you're on bitmask 15 which is 1111 in binary, you can guess that lowering that value to 14 or 13 should produce fairly smooth transitions because very few bits are changed (14 is 1110 in binary). However if you go higher, 16, you will get a very different timbre since the binary value is very different (16 is 10000 in binary).

The only way to smooth it out would be to have two oscillators behind the scene, doings crossfades. It would require 2x the processing amount and sound like standard wavetable interpolation.

Currently you can simulate this by using the two oscillators and different envelopes to simulate a crossfade.

i really appreciate the detailed response and i hadn't considered simulating a crossfade. there are some ppg type sounds among the presets that i love and i was also trying to get some more standard PWM sounds but i'm happy to keep tinkering with the synth as is. thanks!

Try delta envelopes (with bidi loop mode) on the oscillators, on some masks with the right amount it might sound a bit like PWM (you can also modulate mask with LFOs)
