Pan bug / volumes in patch layers
| Léon | Hello, a couple of things that might be bugs, unless user error :) (7.0e firmware) 1. Panning movement, wether using LFO or the panning enveloppe results in a lot of noisy artifacts. For example, take a simple sine osc, pan it from left to right with the panning enveloppe. Same thing with a LFO. 2. Actually LFO to amp is pretty noisy too (wether global modulation or per oscillator), even at modest settings – best heard on a simple sine too. Amp modulation by enveloppe is fine, but it’s not convenient if you want a kind of tremolo. [I think this is a known thing thoug]. 3. If you set some modulation of the volume at the voice global level (that tremelo typically), then as far as I can tell the volume setting of the layer in the patch page is like overidden, when you thought it would offset it. Same thing with pan, if i remember correctly. edit : it’s weird, the noisy behaviour with the panning movement doesn’t seem to be consistant. One one occasion, it wasn’t there. Then came back. |
KODAMO![]() | I think what you are experiencing is normal. LFOs have a finite resolution, and doing panning/volume change on pure sounds like sine wave is the worst case that exhibits these artifacts. There is no solution to that really, other than considering it is part of the character of this synth. In the mix it is very rarely noticeable though. Please share an audio recording and/or the voice file so we can check if it's really normal or if there is something wrong with your unit. |
| Léon | Thanks ! I get it for the LFO, but I thought that those artefacts wouldn’t happen with enveloppes whose resolution is better if I am not mistaken. Here is a wav file. It’s the right/left sweep of a single sine using the dedicated panning enveloppe (Linear shape in that exemple), at various pitches, and a chord in the end. In a funny way, the noise travels in the opposite direction of the sine. |
KODAMO![]() | Envelopes are indeed of almost infinite resolution (32-bit). We do not hear any artifacts in your recording, maybe you have something else causing noise during playback? |
| Léon | Have you tried with headphones ? I can hear it very clearly in the very file I sent you, at medium volume (not too quiet, but nowhere near saturation). It is much less audible through speakers, unless you push them. |
KODAMO![]() | We heared the artifact. I think it is due to panning being handled through 128 values (MIDI standard) so you are hearing volume changes of left and right channels that correspond to different pannings. Envelope resolution does not matter since the value is converted into 0-127 range at the end. Is your music impacted by that behavior or you did test that on purpose? |
| Léon | Ok I get it ! Wasn’t testing it on purpose, but can’t say it impacted my music : I was just testing and trying things around. A curious thing is that the perception of the artifact, at least to me, is very volume dependant, in a non linear way. Turn the volume up, say in headhphones and it very present (subjectively), turn it down and below a certain level it’s like completely gone, though the main part of the sound hasn’t changed that much in volume – a kind of threshold effect. Maybe it’s just my hearing ! I tried to reproduce the artifact with my mask 1, but it is not as clear at all – not the same kind of pure sine of course. I doubt this behaviour will impact my music, I recognize you hear it only in a very specific context, with specific material. Since I am here, thanks for that great synth, it’s a fantastic sonic laboratory. Beyond FM, I am surprised with all the waveshaping fun you can have, with 0hz carrier and stuff. That’s a world in itself. Can wait for the Infini now😊 |
