CME / WIDI dongle Issues

dreikelvin
I am using one of these dongles to connect to all of my gear in my studio:

https://www.cme-pro.com/widi-master/

"CME Widi Master" is a Bluetooth dongle that powers via the Midi port and pairs up with either your computer or another Widi device within range to allow wireless midi communication across devices.

I managed to set my brand new Kodamo Mask 1 EX Mk2 with a Widi Master dongle this morning and it worked as it should - until I switched it off. Later, switching it back on it was completely unresponsive to Midi messages - no idea why. I tested everything. Switched the device off, changed to a cable - and Midi just worked normally. As soon as I switch it off, plug the Widi Master back in, it just doesn't do anything anymore.

How does it happen that it works just once - and then afterwards it completely refuses to recognize anymore Midi data? I can see the dongle receiving Midi information by the blue LED blinking as soon as I hit a note - but nothing seems to enter the Mask1 to be processed internally. Very strange!

Working back with cable for now.

Has anyone here noticed similar issues in connection with CME/Widi devices?

We may have to purchase a WIDI module to try it out, but using MIDI Out as a power source is kinda hacky.
So what happens is that it always work the first time, but stops working after a power cycle using the soft power On/Off button? (but it will work again if you unplug the Mask1EX MK2 and plug it back?)

Yes, I tried, unplugging the Mask1 EX from the power supply and plugging it into another power source - same result.

Removing and plugging the Widi dongle back into the device while it is powered on doesn't make a difference either.

Btw, using the midi port as a power source is something all Widi dongles do, including the ones you can buy from Korg and Roland. Every Midi port has a low-power current running through - that's how they get the Soc in these dongles to work :)

I tried my WIDI Master and WIDI Jack devices with the Mk.2 and noticed the same. I know Stéphane said the Mk.2 doesn't consume much power, so I wonder if the MIDI Out port is pushing out the required 3V/5V that the WIDI Master/Jack needs?

The WIDI UHost works perfectly, though. This sits between the power supply and USB-C port and would derive the full 5V from that. I've tested that here too, and it works just fine.

We ordered two of these to try. It is probably not a power issue, if that was the case the Mask1EX would probably not work correctly. It uses 3.3V MIDI but CME says it should work as well

Issue is solved, wait for firmware 1.4 for the fix 😉

Firmware 1.5 now works flawlessly with the CME Widi dongle. Thanks!
